1-deoxysphinganine is an atypical sphingolipid formed when serine palmitoyltransferase condenses palmitoyl-CoA with alanine instead of serine. 1-deoxysphinganine accumulates in cells, particularly mitochondria, causing fragmentation and dysfunction.
